Chapter 9
By the time I returned home I was well past the mystery of the disappearing residents of Toad Suck and my conversation with dim and frankly batshit insane Lucienne Yadda-yadda I’m the queen of the shifter world St. Clair. All I wanted was a fat-ass pizza, or something equally fattening because, hello, diet for the last few months to fit into The Dress. You know, the one I no longer actually fucking had. So the diet, the starving myself to near death to lose that last few pounds to be something those damned glossy wedding magazines had convinced me I needed to be, could go screw itself sideways with a bargepole.
I wanted carbs. I wanted fat. I wanted vodka. And then I wanted snuggles with my sexy wolf and to forget all this wedding shit for a couple of hours.
Did I get that when I walked, tired, through the door into my kitchen? No. A crowd of faces all looked my way, eagerness written in all of their features. Great, a fucking welcoming committee. My dad, Susan the roo-shifter-slash-dressmaker, her mate James and the grannies all watched me as I trooped through the door.
“How’d it go, love?” My dad, heavily pregnant, rose from his seat like a behemoth rising from the deep.
I would have said a kraken, but I’d found out a few months ago that krakens are actually tiny itty-bitty little assholes. Technically they still have a bounty out on mine and the Mom’s heads, but word on the street or the currents is that no one will be stupid enough to try and enforce it. Not after my showdown with Poseidon’s son. Even the big man himself, Donny the sea god, had decided to look the other way.
Rumor had it that he’d been so pissed off with his son, Triton, for nearly causing a cross pantheon war between gods that he’d exiled the motherfinner to serve the sirens. Poor fucker. I’d met a siren or two in the past and they weren’t ladies you wanted to mess with much less be beholden to.
“A lot of nothing doing to be honest,” I sighed and dropped down into the nearest chair. E-Dub, in his all his floofy anime sparkly cat form, purred as he rubbed his head against my cheeks. I petted him absently. Cast couldn’t be anywhere near or he’d be human-shaped and showing off in the muscle vest he’d acquired from somewhere.
“Toad Suck is abandoned, and the dress shop was less closed for the afternoon and more permanently gone out of business.”
I still had questions about that, but they would have to wait. I had a wedding to sort out first. I looked at dad hopefully. “How did the investigation go? Did anyone manage to pick up a trail?”
Dad grimaced, his nose wrinkling as he shook his head. “We scoured the whole town but not so much as a wayward sequin. I couldn’t get a trace with any tracker spells and none of the shifters could get a scent.
